Red cardwood rolled out for hardwood guardrail15-03-2011
The red carpet was rolled out following the completion of a hardwood guardrail along the N23 Westfrisiaweg trunk road in Heerhugowaard on 15 March 2011. We are delighted that the municipality of Heerhugowaard is a forerunner when it comes to the use of this environmentally friendly alternative. Hardly anywhere else in the Netherlands have these wooden guardrails been employed on such a wide scale.
Wijma Kampen B.V. was responsible for producing and delivering the guardrail. Some years ago, a hardwood guardrail was developed together with the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Centrum Hout, the Technical University of Delft and others as a sustainable alternative for steel barriers on the central reservations of motorways. The slimmer version developed by Wijma and since tested provides an effective ecologically responsible and economically viable alternative.
Speeches were given by Heerhugowaard council executive C. Kwint, by Mr H. de Lang of TÜV Rheinland TNO Automotive Int. and by Ad Wesselink, managing director of Wijma Kampen B.V. Council executive Ms G. Baijards ushered in the new wooden guardrail with a champagne toast. In addition to the guardrail, a tree was also planted.
Everyone is convinced that in the near future, this "jewel of a rail" will become more and more visible along Dutch motorways.
